Oh WOW! its Cowboy time again – where did the year go?

The greatest celebration of the American West, its people, culture and traditions is the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

The 28th annual gathering is set for January 30 to February 4, 2012, here in Elko.

Every winter for the last 27 years, cowboys, ranchers, rural and urban people have traveled en masse to this small high desert community, to join with friends, family and others who care about the rural West. Together, they listen to poetry and music, learn about cowboy culture in the U.S. and around the world, experience great art, watch western films, learn a craft, and gather to eat, drink and swap stories.

Western Folklife Center produces the event.

Ticket sales for Members of the Western Folklife Center can buy tickets for the 28th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering starting Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Non-members can purchase tickets one month later, on Thursday, October 6.

Programs at the 28th Gathering will focus on the southwestern United States, specifically Arizona and New Mexico—which are celebrating their centennials next year—and West Texas. The event will present poets and musicians from the region, as well as workshops and panel discussions focused on regional food, culture and agriculture. An exhibition of Southwest ranching culture featuring the photography of Kurt Markus and Jay Dusard will be on display in the Western Folklife Center’s Wiegand Gallery.

The 28th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering will feature nearly 50 poets, musicians and musical groups from the U.S., Canada and Australia, performing on seven stages at four different venues. The line-up includes cowboy poets Baxter Black, Wally McRae, Paul Zarzyski, Waddie Mitchell, Yvonne Hollenbeck, Joel Nelson, Doris Daley and many others. Music is as integral to the Gathering as poetry; the musical line-up includes Ian Tyson, Michael Martin Murphey, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, R.W. Hampton, Stephanie Davis, Wylie & The Wild West, Dave Stamey, Hot Club of Cowtown and more. Scroll down for a full list of artists and their hometowns.

New artists at the 28th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering include Tucson, Arizona’s Ronstadt Generations lead by Michael J. Ronstadt, younger brother of Linda Ronstadt. Michael continues the family’s musical tradition with his two sons, Michael G. and Petie, who play a rich repertoire of original material alongside traditional Southwest and Mexican songs. Also at the Gathering for the first time is Montana singer-songwriter Martha Scanlan, who lives and cowboys on a remote ranch near the Wyoming border. Martha’s solo album, The West Was Burning has received critical acclaim. Tim Hus & The Rocky Mountain Two, who hail from Calgary, Alberta, and sing what they call “Canadiana cowboy music,” are also making their debut appearance at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Their latest recording is Hockeytown.

Additional highlights include a keynote address by actor and author Barry Corbin (Lonesome Dove, Northern Exposure) who will discuss the mythology of the cowboy and the misrepresentation of cowboy and ranching life in the media. The Gathering also features hands-on workshops in traditional western arts such as rawhide braiding, hat making and fiddling, as well as three western dances, film screenings, and open-mic poetry and music sessions.

Tickets to the 28th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering can be purchased at www.westernfolklife.org, by calling 775-738-7508, toll-free 888-880-5885, or by stopping in to the Western Folklife Center’s ticket office, 501 Railroad Street, Elko. Western Folklife Center members can purchase tickets beginning at 9:00 am Pacific Time, September 6, 2011, and non-members can purchase tickets beginning Thursday, October 6.

Ashburton Ventures says their drilling program at the Deep Creek Project, 112 kilometers north of Elko, Nevada is almost complete.

The company drilled twenty-seven core holes in the current program, a total of 3,178 meters (10,427 feet). They have cut just over half of the core and submitted it for assay. 20% of the core assay has been received so far.

The company is quite happy with the results, especially partial results for drill hole DC-11-C-5, which intersected an average of 3.67 grams per tonne gold over six meters in the Waterfall Vein Area.

Drilling in the Upper Vein Area found an average of 2.54 grams per tonne gold over 1.5 meters in drill hole DC-11-C-10, and 6.94 grams per tonne gold over 1.2 meters in drill hole DC-11-C-13.

Cores were cut with on site saws, and at another facility in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Half the HQ core was submitted for treatment to the ALS Chemex Laboratories in Elko, and some to North Vancouver, British Columbia.

For our technical readers, the company says “The samples have been assayed for gold using the Au-AA24 protocol (0.005-10 part per million gold detection range), with overlimit values re-assayed using the Au-GRA22 protocol (0.05-1,000 part per million gold detection range). A certified standard was submitted for assay along with the core.”

And for the geologists, “In both the Waterfall Vein and Upper Vein Areas, the anomalous intervals are associated with breccias in variably silicified limestones of the Proterozoic McCoy Group. It is believed that the mineralization is contained within the breccias, whose true dimensions will not be known until further drilling results are received.”

A man pulled over in Interstate 80 for a routine speeding stop was arrested Saturday after Nevada State Troopers found over 10 pounds of marijuana in his possession.

Kenny Su Kim, 44 of Fremont, CA, was found blazing his way down I-80 near Elko by troopers and pulled over. Suspecting some form of criminal activity, the trooper summoned a K-9 drug dog to sniff out the vehicle. The dog alerted the trooper to a possible controlled substance in the car.

Kim was eventually released from the scene as the officer had no other reason to keep him. Later on, the officer obtained a search warrant and discovered 10 pounds of the green stuff in a luggage bag, prompting authorities to track Kim down at the Red Lion Hotel & Casino and arrest him on charges of unlawful import of a controlled substance, possession not for sale and possession for sale of a controlled substance.

His bail was set at $15,142.

Holy marijuana, Batman! Nevada Highway Patrol pulled over and subsequently arrested a car containing a man and a woman from Minnesota who were carrying more than 100 pounds of marijuana.

A trooper stopped the car for a routine traffic violation on Interstate 80 by West Wendover. The driver and passenger, Kim Singrattana and Russell Castillo, 45 and 36 respectively, looked suspicious to the officer and he requested a search warrant. After releasing the suspects and obtaining a warrant to search the vehicle, he hit the pot mother lode – 103 pounds of the green stuff in separate one pound packages.

The tokin’ twosome were later found and arrested at a trucker’s lounge. They were charged with felony counts of trafficking a controlled substance, unlawful possession and intent to sell a controlled substance. Bail for the Minnesota pair is set at $60,000.

Hard work, scarce pay, lonesome nights, heartbreak and death — common themes of the blues and of the songs, poems and stories of the cowboy. Cowboy culture is a blend of traditions and influences — blues and other African American cultural traditions have been a major influence on the evolution of western music. The 27th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, January 24-29, in Elko, Nevada, will explore the connections between traditional cowboy and western music and traditional African American blues music.

Among the blues programs at the Gathering, legendary folk singer Ramblin’ Jack Elliott will perform music from his GRAMMY Award-winning album, A Stranger Here. After last year’s Gathering, Jack headed to Los Angeles to receive the GRAMMY Award for Best Traditional Blues Recording for his CD A Stranger Here. At this Gathering, Jack will share a sampling of this blues music—all pre-World War II tunes that Jack knew and loved. He will be joined by a few of the revered musicians featured on his award-winning album, including pianist Van Dyke Parks.

Zydeco music is a synthesis of traditional Creole, Cajun and African-American music including R&B, blues, jazz and gospel. Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie will perform their special brand of foot-stompin’ zydeco from the bayou country of southwest Louisiana. And Sourdough Slim and Robert Armstrong will present blues and old-time music reminiscent of the 1920s and 30s, including Jimmie Rodgers songs.

The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is the nation’s largest annual celebration of cowboy culture. For six days in January the community of Elko welcomes thousands of cowboys and cowgirls, poets and musicians, artisans and scholars, rural and city people—all of whom share a love of the American West and the artistic traditions of ranching and cowboy culture. More than 60 poets and musicians from the U.S., Canada, Australia and Hungary will perform on eight stages at five different venues throughout Elko. Additional highlights include cowboys from Hungary, the Marshall Ford Swing Band (featuring Emily Gimble, granddaughter of Texas fiddle legend Johnny Gimble), songwriting legend Ian Tyson, the fiddlin’ Quebe Sisters, Wylie and the Wild West, and renowned cowboy poets Waddie Mitchell, Baxter Black and Wallace McRae. Tickets to the 27th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering can be purchased online at www.westernfolklife.org/cowboypoetrygathering or by calling 888-880-5885.

In a move that will increase the transparency of its records, the Bureau of Land Management published in last Wednesday's Federal Register a notice announcing a change in the way that the agency handles certain personal information relating to public land ranchers.

In a move that will increase the transparency of its records, the Bureau of Land Management published in last Wednesday’s Federal Register a notice announcing a change in the way that the agency handles certain personal information relating to public land ranchers. With the change, which is consistent with a recent ruling of the U.S. District Court for Idaho, the BLM will post on a publicly accessible Website reports that include the official mailing addresses of nearly 18,000 BLM grazing permittees and lessees. Personal telephone numbers of and financial information about public land ranchers will not be made available on the publicly accessible Website.

The record system change, formally known as a notice of amendment to an existing system of records, seeks to balance mandates from two Federal laws with different purposes — the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) of 1966 (as amended), which calls for full or partial disclosure of certain government records, and the Privacy Act of 1974 (as amended), which establishes procedures governing the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of personal identifying information about individuals.

Unless comments are received that would require a contrary determination, the change will take effect after a 40-day public comment period that began Dec. 29 and ends Feb. 7, 2011. Anyone interested in commenting on the amendment may do so by submitting written comments to BLM Privacy Office, 1849 C Street, N.W., Room 725 LS, Washington, D.C. 20240. E-mailed comments should be sent to privacy@blm.gov. Commenters should be aware that the entire content of their comments, including their personal identifying information, may be made publicly available at any time. For further information, please contact Robert Roudabush, Division Chief, Rangeland Resources, Bureau of Land Management, 1849 C Street, N.W., Room 201 LS, Washington, D.C. 20240; phone number: 202-912-7222; e-mail: Rob_Roudabush@blm.gov.
