Mark Chamberlain of BC Space and curator/art writer Mike McGee talk about the monumental forty-year history of BC Space & Photographic Services, which was founded by Mark Chamberlain and Jerry Burchfield in 1973 and which was commemorated in the recently released book BC Space: Mything In Action. Chamberlain and McGee will sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase in the museum store.

About the Speakers

Mark Chamberlain a photographic artist, educator, curator and published writer. He started his photographic career in Laguna Beach in the early 1970s after serving in the army during the Vietnam War and doing a one-year tour in South Korea. He has received several awards, and his work is in numerous public and private collections, including Laguna Art Museum, Orange County Museum of Art, the University of Dubuque, the Polaroid Collection, and the Cincinnati Museum of Art. A solo retrospective of his 40-year career in art, Reflections of an Armchair Arteologist, was on view at Soka University in Aliso Viejo in 2010.

Chamberlain has photographed the work of many artists including Joseph Albers, Paul Darrow, Richard Diebenkorn, Laddie John Dill, George Hermes, Ed Kienholz, Paul Outerbridge, Ed Ruscha, Jeffrey Vallance and Andy Wing. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Maters degree in business administration, both from the University of Iowa.

Mike McGee has worked as an art writer, curator, and arts administrator since 1982. He is currently director of the Begovich Gallery and Professor of Art at Cal State Fullerton, where he heads the museum studies/exhibition design graduate program and serves as department graduate coordinator. In his time at the university, McGee has nearly doubled the number of works in the CSU Fullerton sculpture collection and established the Richard Newquist Memorial Sculpture Court.

He has organized and written catalog essays for more than 200 exhibitions, working with artists such as Don Bachardy, Tony DeLap, Paul McCarthy, Mark Ryden, Kenny Scharf, and Robert Williams. He founded the Cal State Fullerton Grand Central Art Center in downtown Santa Ana. His most recent books include John Paul Jones: The Pursuit of Beauty’s Perfect ProofManuel Pardo: Universo Sonado in Technicolor, and Emigdio Vasquez, to be published in 2014. McGee is past President of the Board of Trustees for the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, a founding board member for Arts Orange County, and a member of the Mayor’s Arts Task Force for the City of Santa Ana.
